SPH Search, a joint venture between Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Norwegian media group Schibsted ASA, has started crawling and indexing relevant websites as part of its plans to create a local Web index for Singapore.
The Web index will enable SPH Search to create a local search engine providing highly relevant search results pertaining specifically to Singapore.
SPH Search, incorporated in September last year, expects the new search engine service to be launched in the first half of next year.
Paul Jansen, CEO of SPH Search, explained that the service will comprise two distinct features: a directory service providing information on the 160,000 companies that are estimated to be registered in Singapore as well as the more traditional Web search service.
A nationwide data collection exercise also began in July, enabling SPH Search to enhance its existing database of information required for the directory service.
Its existing database includes the range of information published and maintained by SPH.
