SPH opens its first Buzz Pod store (ST)

BackNov 02, 2009

SINGAPORE Press Holdings (SPH) yesterday opened its first convenience store, which sells all its publications in addition to food products and beverages.

The new 300 sq ft store, known as "Buzz Pod", is located near a bus stop along Marine Parade Road and is within walking distance of Parkway Parade.

It is SPH's biggest news-stand to date. The 47 smaller news-stands operated by the media group sell only newspapers, magazines and confectionary items.

The store at Marine Parade will be similar to a 7-Eleven or Cheers store, and will sell items such as chicken pies, pau, instant noodles and iced coffee.

SPH's newspaper services division's circulation manager, Mr Eric Ng, said the limited space in its 47 kiosks – which are about 100 sq ft each – in high-traffic areas meant the company had to look for bigger shops and offer more products.

Two more of the bigger outlets will be opened by the end of this year at Excelsior Hotel and the Golden Shoe carpark, with 20 more such outlets by the end of next year.

As part of the Marine Parade store's opening, those who patronise it in the next few weeks will receive gifts such as a goody bag and Nestle Frappe.

Ms Alicia Seah, 36, liked the variety of products at the store.

"This store offers things you may not find at a convenience store such as children's books and toys, which is great," said the communications manager, who was with her three-year-old daughter.
